the writer Jean Marie Adiaffi (1941-1999)
Jean Marie Adiaffi was born in 1941 in Bettie ( Region of Abengourou) and he died in 1999.
He had lost his parents very early and was then brought up by his maternal uncle.
After his primary school in his village and his secondary school in Bingerville, he went to France where he got his baccalaureat. He entered IDHEC and got an internship at OCORA and will become Director and Producer. Then, came back to Abidjan to work at Ivorian Television, but working conditions there did not fit his expectation. He went back to France to prepare his Bachelor and Master Degree in Philosophy at Sorbonne. After his CAPES ( Post graduate teaching certificate) he came back to Cote d’ Ivoire to teach philosophy in secondary school such as Lycee classique of Abidjan.
Jean Marie Adiaffi is considered as one of the figurehead of the ‘Ivorian new writing’made of ‘the mixing of genres’,’nzassa writing’, as he said himself, with a scathing language where precious and vulgar words constitute ‘those blow with pestles in the mouth of the oppressors’.
In one word, a strong writing at the service of a no limit political and poetic commitment for the freedom and the liberation of the oppressed.
Thus, with his titles of Director, Producer and also philosophy teacher, it is particularly in literature that Jean Marie Adiaffi will feel at ease, being one of the most innovative and talented of Ivorian writers, with ‘ a burst writing’. ‘The mixing of genres or the genre without genre as he put it himself, hence the qualifier of ‘nzassa’ that clothe made of many pieces of multicolor clothes. Words knock against one another in that literature like ‘lighting’, developing the themes of freedom and independence. Elsewhere, his work is a product of multiple influences: presocratic authors, particularly Parmenide and Heraclite, symbolists such as Eluard, Rimbaud and Lautreamont, the authors of negritude notably Cesaire, and the agni Culture.
Under the title general of ‘ assonan attin’( the path of liberation), this literature is based on a project of triple trilogy: the novel, poetry and drama. Only two axes have been realized: the novel with ‘ la carte d’identite’, ‘silence on developpe’, ‘les naufrages de l’intelligence’ and poetry with only two titles: ‘ la galerie infernale’ and ‘ d’ eclairs et de foudre’.
The third collection should have as title ‘ a l’oree de ma montagne de kaolin’but in 1969 he had already published a poetry collection which was not a part of his trilogy: ‘yale sonan’( ed promotion et edition, paris) as he had published in 1983 a tale for child, ‘ la legende de l’elephanteau’( edition de l’amitie).
Finally, Jean Marie Adiaffi is also the inventor of a concept: le bossonisme from bosson, which means genie in agny, presented as the religion of African people.
According to Adiaffi, colonization began by spirituality( the action of Missionaries) hence, liberation has to be done by spirituality. The ‘bossonism’ another name of ‘ animism’, a term he challenged, appears then as a theory of the upgrade of ‘African spirituality’.
For decorations, Jean marie Adiaffi was UDELF literary prize winner(west africa) in 1981 with two novels ' ‘D eclairs et de foudres' and ‘ la carte d’identite’ and has been decorated in the field of culture in 1991.
